Winchester College is located in the heart of the historic city of Winchester - one of England’s most beautiful and culturally rich cathedral cities. Nestled between the rolling hills of the South Downs, the College offers a safe, peaceful, and inspiring environment for students to live and learn, while remaining within easy reach of London and major international airports.
The school’s ancient buildings and quiet courtyards are just a short walk from the city centre, where students can explore independent shops, cafés, markets, and historic sites such as Winchester Cathedral and the Great Hall. From our cutting-edge Sports Centre, to the observatory perched above Science School and the inspiring performance space of New Hall, our campus provides the perfect stage for students to discover and develop their talents - physical, artistic, and intellectual.
The College is set within a magnificent 250-acre estate, offering space, beauty, and a strong connection to nature. Among these are 52 acres of well-maintained playing fields, over 100 acres of ancient water meadows, and 11 acres of formal gardens - where, during our summer programme, students can enjoy lessons in the open air.
Our Spaces
Chamber Court
The heart of the medieval school, where the whole community ate, slept, worked and worshipped. Now predominately used by Scholars who live in the school’s original boarding house.
Cloister
A medieval covered cloister. The stone benches allow it to serve as a cool place of study in the summer, and generations of pupils have carved their names here.
Sports Centre
Opened in 2024, the Sports Centre includes a state-of-the-art gym, squash and fives courts, a dance studio and martial arts Dojo. The eight-court Sports Hall accommodates basketball, badminton, volleyball, netball and more.
New Hall
New Hall is one of the College’s largest performance, lecture and assembly spaces with excellent acoustics and backstage facilities.
College Hall
The dining hall for Scholars, where they continue to eat each meal and where many school functions are held.
Science School
The Science School is situated in a part of the campus overlooking the playing fields and water meadows. It houses extensive science laboratories and an observatory.
Outdoor Classroom
Opened in 2019, the outdoor classroom overlooks the river that inspired Keats’ Ode To Autumn. The amphitheatre seating and a pontoon encourage exploration and connection with the natural world.
School
A building in the style of Sir Christopher Wren. Pupils have been taught here for nearly 200 years; it continues to be used by pupils as a study and events space.
